Interview with Janet Price

I decided it would be a good idea to interview one of my friend's mom, who is an ER nurse, to get a better understanding of what I want to study and become in the near future in the healthcare profession.

Q: What do you do day to day in your career in the medical field?

A: I take care of patients by administering medication and doing procedures such as room cleansing, dressing, and helping the patients with their daily activities.

She is an ER nurse and rounder, so she is basically in charge of taking care of all of the patients daily needs.

Q: Why did you choose to go into healthcare?

A: I have always been interested in science and the medical field so that I can help others.

Helping people that are in need is also my main reason for pursuing a medical career.

Q: What are some of the perks of being in your career?

A: I have a flexible schedule, it is a good paying occupation and it gives me an opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives.

Making a difference in people’s lives is one of the most amazing feelings ever and that’s what I hope to work up to.

Q: If you could go back to college, would you change your profession?

A: Yes, I would be a pharmacist because I have always had a love for chemistry.

I asked this question to get a better understanding of what are some of the best medical fields to go in to.

Q: What are some different medical fields that you might have chosen and why?

A: I would have been either a pharmacist because of my love for chemistry or become a medical doctor to further my healthcare career in the diagnostic area.

This gave me a new perspective on different areas in the healthcare field.

Q: Do you regret anything about your pathway in medical school?

A: I regret not furthering my education to obtain a medical degree.

I take this into consideration because I want to be completely satisfied with my education when I finish college.

Q: How do different medical fields or departments interact with each other to reach a common goal?

A: Different departments use a collaborative approach to communicate amongst respective divisions to achieve a common goal for our mutual patient.

This answer helps me to get a better understanding of how different medical positions intertwine.

Q: What is the most difficult part of your job?

A: The extreme physical demands of bedside nursing, such as lifting and moving patients.

This makes me think about the negatives that go along with certain medical fields.

Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?

A: The most rewarding part of my job is helping a patient achieve better health outcomes by providing for all their psychosocial needs.

Psychosocial needs include being there for the patient emotionally not just physically.

Q: If you could change anything about the medical field what would you change?

A: I would change Obama Care, because I believe that massive regulation and overreaching of the government will make healthcare less efficient and detrimental to the health of the patients.

I strongly agree with Mrs.Price’s beliefs, due to the negative comments I heart frequently from medical professionals.

Empathy

I believe that I am a very empathic person and can relate to or understand hardships that others are going through.  I always do my best to listen if someone needs advice or sympathy.  The findings on the empathy test revealed my score to be average.  This score is somewhat accurate, however I believe it did score me lower than I would have thought I would be.  Sometimes I have trouble listening to other people’s viewpoints because I am so strong in my beliefs and morals, which could explain why the score was just average.

Empathy is somewhat genetic but a great deal of a person’s empathy is influenced by their environment.  For instance, if someone was raised in a home where love is unconditional they will be more apt to give and accept love.  On the other hand, if someone was raised in a home where there was no empathy or love toward each other, then they will shut down and become hardened by their negative experience.

My AP Statistics teacher is an amazing example of someone who shows empathy to everyone.  For example, she always is ready to listen to anything that is troubling you and is generous to people who are struggling financially. However, I also know another teacher that is lacking in empathy.   Instead of trying to understand why students are having trouble in a certain area she doesn’t care to listen or understand.  She presses her views unto the students and doesn’t care to listen to anyone else’s view.

Whom Do I Envy? What Do I Lie About?

Sometimes I find myself envying other students that are more successful than me.  For instance, I feel like I have failed or I could have done better if someone gets a better grade or gets accepted into a better college than me.  Also, whenever someone asks me if I did good on a test or not I tell them I did good even if I didn’t do as well as I would have liked.  However, by envying and telling white lies I recognize that I need to own up to who I am no matter what other people may think about me.  I realize that all I can do is my personal best and past that I shouldn’t let other people’s success intimidate me.  I should be proud of all my many achievements and learn that you can’t always be the best in life.  I will strive to be the best me that I can be!

One Word Resolution

Patience

I chose the word patience for my one word resolution, because I often struggle with tolerance and waiting.  I wish to become more patient with people and things that are to come in the future.  I hope I will be able to slow down and enjoy life, instead of being impatient for the day to end.

Project Questions

1.      I need and want to know this:

I need to discover how different fields of medicine relate to cardiology, such as anesthesiology.  I want to know how cardiology can branch into different types of medicine.  This way I can discover what field would better suit my career interests.

2.      What is your current essential question?

Which healthcare profession should I choose, in order to prioritize my needs of working in a career that assess criteria of something that would validate my reasons for choosing to research the medical field?

3.      How do you envision using technology to best show case your project?

I envision using technology such as; PowerPoint, Word, Pictochart, graphs, pictures and statistics to best show case my project.  These will help me showcase the best facts and pictures in an abstract way to help answer my essential question.

4.      What will you do for your "real inquiry"?

First I will start off by asking the question of what medical careers branch off from cardiology, specifically does anesthesiology.  Then I will research the careers that relate to cardiology.  Next, I will draw my own conclusions on what careers best fit me and my wants and needs.  Then I will present my findings in an abstract presentation to draw my conclusion.
